A filter can only hold what the oil brings to it. Run the right oil and the filter
spends its life catching ordinary wear debris. Run the wrong one — too thin for
the heat, or short on the additives that keep soot in suspension — and the
filter blocks early, the bypass valve opens, and the engine runs on unfiltered oil
without telling anyone. That is why we sell both.
Reading a grade. On a 15W-40, the 15W is how the oil
behaves cold, at start-up, and the 40 is how it behaves at operating
temperature. A lower first number flows sooner on a cold morning; the second number
has to match what the engine was designed for. A 15W-40 and a 20W-50 are not
interchangeable just because both say 40 or 50 somewhere.
The API category matters more than the grade. Printed on the back as
a two-letter code — CK-4, CJ-4,
CI-4 for diesel — it tells you which generation of engine the
additive package was designed for. Newer categories are generally backward
compatible; older ones are not forward compatible. An engine that asks for CK-4 will
not be happy on CI-4, whatever the viscosity says.
Change the filter with the oil, every time. A used filter is holding
a quantity of dirty oil and all the debris it has already caught. Putting fresh oil
through it starts the new interval part-way used up. The cost of the element is
trivial against the cost of the oil, let alone the engine.
The last two groups are not engine oils. Shell Corena is a
compressor oil, formulated for oil-flooded rotary screw and sliding vane air
compressors. Caltex Rando HD is a hydraulic oil, for vane, piston and gear pumps.
Both are ISO VG 68, which is a different scale from the SAE grades above, and
neither belongs in an engine. They are here because the machines that need them are
the same machines our filters go on.
Intervals come from your engine manual, not from us. They depend on
the engine, the duty, the fuel and the dust, and in Karachi conditions the dust alone
can halve a figure quoted for a European fleet. If you are not sure what your engine
asks for, send us the make, model and serial and we will look it up with you.
