Water in diesel displaces the film that lubricates the injection pump, then corrodes what it touches. A separator collects it so it can be drained before it gets that far.
Water rarely arrives in one dramatic event. It is usually condensation in a part-full tank as temperatures swing between day and night, water carried in during storage and transfer, or moisture the fuel has absorbed. Tanks left part-full over a long standby period are the commonest case on generator installations.
A separator only helps if it is drained. Make it part of the daily or weekly check, and pay attention to what comes out — it is one of the few free readings you get on the quality of your fuel supply.
